Manchester United are facing a £1 million lawsuit from one of their former academy graduates, Axel Tuanzebe, who has accused the club of clinical negligence and mishandling an injury that he claims left him with long-term physical limitations.
Tuanzebe, now 27 and playing for Premier League side Burnley, filed the claim with the High Court in July 2025. Court documents obtained by Sky News reveal that the defender believes Manchester United’s medical department failed to provide proper care during a critical phase of his development — an alleged failure that he says cost him years of his playing prime and reduced his professional value.
Having joined United at the age of eight, Tuanzebe rose through the ranks to make his senior debut under José Mourinho in 2017. However, his career at Old Trafford was marred by recurring injuries that limited his appearances and ultimately saw him leave on a free transfer in 2023.

At the heart of Tuanzebe’s lawsuit is a pars fracture — a stress-related injury to the lower spine — that first developed in January 2020. The defender reportedly began experiencing “significant pain and discomfort” following the injury, which was aggravated during rehabilitation and training periods.
The claim alleges that Manchester United’s medical team failed to provide adequate rest and did not refer him to a specialist spinal surgeon when the issue first appeared. According to the documents, the injury later became chronic, and by July 2022, Tuanzebe sustained the same fracture on the right side of his lower spine.
Tuanzebe’s legal team argues that proper diagnosis and treatment “would, on the balance of probabilities,” have allowed him to recover fully and continue playing without restriction. Instead, the injury has “impacted his career trajectory and earnings potential,” limiting his capacity to perform consistently at elite level football.
Claims of Negligence and Long-Term Impact
Tuanzebe’s case outlines a pattern of alleged medical mismanagement during his time at United. His legal representatives claim that club doctors pushed him to resume training and competitive matches prematurely, despite evidence of ongoing spinal stress.
The defender contends that had the club acted with appropriate caution and sought expert consultation, the injury might have healed completely without recurring complications. “Appropriate treatment plans,” the lawsuit reads, “would have resulted in the claimant avoiding the pain and discomfort set out below and would have resulted in him being able to play professional football at elite level without restriction or impediment.”
Even though Tuanzebe continues to compete in the Premier League, the lawsuit argues that the lingering effects of the spinal issues have reduced his athletic capacity, market value, and potential earnings — leading to the claim for damages exceeding £1 million.
