The match, staged in Bayamón as a rescheduled fixture against Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle, had already drawn attention due to earlier injury concerns surrounding Messi and a series of logistical complications. Despite the disorder, the Inter Miami captain emerged unhurt and is expected to feature in the club’s upcoming Major League Soccer encounter against Orlando City.
Rescheduled Fixture Amid Messi Injury Concerns
The friendly had initially been slated for 13 February but was postponed after Messi reported hamstring discomfort during a prior exhibition match against Barcelona SC in Ecuador. Inter Miami later confirmed that the new date of 26 February was agreed upon in coordination with the event promoter and the government of Puerto Rico.
The rearranged fixture came at a demanding moment in Miami’s calendar. The club had opened its 2026 MLS campaign just five days earlier with a 3-0 defeat to Los Angeles FC in California. With another league match scheduled less than 72 hours after the Puerto Rico friendly, questions were raised about player workload and the necessity of staging the exhibition at such a congested point in the season.
Nonetheless, the sold-out crowd of 12,500 at Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel reflected the enduring appeal of Messi and the commercial significance of Inter Miami’s international engagements.
Delayed Kickoff and Unusual Match Conditions
The evening began with an unexpected one-hour delay reportedly caused by issues with team uniforms. Both Inter Miami and Independiente del Valle ultimately wore predominantly black kits, making on-field distinction difficult for spectators.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano opted to start a lineup largely composed of players who had not featured in the season opener. Prior to kickoff, he indicated that all available squad members could see playing time, a plan that materialised when Messi entered at the start of the second half.
Despite the unusual circumstances, the match maintained competitive intensity. Messi’s composure from the penalty spot ultimately secured a 2-1 win, offering a measure of reassurance after the club’s opening league defeat.

A pursuing security guard tackled the fan, inadvertently bringing Messi to the ground. The Argentine quickly regained his footing and appeared uninjured. Notably, none of his teammates intervened during the episode, though Paraguayan striker Carlos González of Independiente del Valle approached Messi in a gesture of support as officials worked to restore order.

With the friendly concluded, attention now turns back to MLS competition. Inter Miami are scheduled to face Orlando City in an intra-state rivalry fixture on Sunday evening, less than three days after the Puerto Rico match.
