Paul Pogba’s much-advertised Monaco renaissance appears to be heading towards an unexpectedly early ending, with the 33-year-old midfielder reportedly in talks over the termination of his contract after an injury-hit return to competitive football. The latest development comes barely 14 months after Monaco presented the 2018 World Cup winner as a marquee free signing and handed him a two-year contract until June 2027. What was supposed to be “La renaissance” is now threatening to become “La revanche des blessures” — because apparently Pogba’s comeback story still has not received permission to reach its happy ending.
MONACO COMEBACK THAT NEVER REALLY GOT STARTED
Pogba joined Monaco in June 2025 after his four-year doping suspension had been reduced to 18 months following an appeal. The move was designed to give the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder a fresh start in France and a chance to rebuild a career interrupted by injuries, suspension and a long absence from football. Monaco officially announced a contract running until June 30, 2027, making the current termination reports a dramatic change of direction from the original comeback plan.
Unfortunately, the comeback has struggled to escape the medical department. Monaco’s own player statistics list Pogba with only six appearances and 115 minutes in competitive football for the club, including just one start. Earlier in 2026, Monaco chief executive Thiago Scuro admitted that the club’s original plan for Pogba was not working as expected, after the midfielder had been restricted to only 30 minutes of action at that stage. The numbers have since remained painfully small for a player whose reputation once made midfield look like his personal office.
ANOTHER INJURY, ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT THE FUTURE
The latest reports say Pogba suffered another thigh injury during Monaco’s pre-season tour in England, adding another chapter to a fitness battle that has repeatedly interrupted his return. Reports now indicate that Monaco and the player are discussing an early termination, although the separation is being described as a process rather than a completed termination. In other words, the contract has not necessarily heard its final whistle yet — but somebody appears to be looking for the exit tunnel.
There is an uncomfortable irony in the timing. Pogba was still part of Monaco’s preparations and was involved around the squad during their pre-season trip, while the club’s friendly against Liverpool at Anfield on August 9 ended in a 3-2 Monaco victory. Yet only days later, reports of another injury and a possible contract breakup have placed his Monaco future back under the spotlight. For a player whose career has included a World Cup triumph, major trophies at Juventus and Manchester United, and a spectacular return to Old Trafford, the latest chapter is looking less like a grand comeback and more like football’s most stubborn “loading…” screen.
Pogba’s situation remains especially significant because Monaco’s original investment was based on the belief that time, rehabilitation and regular football could restore a world-class midfielder. Instead, the club has received only fragments of the player it hoped to see. Reports that the contract may now be terminated would leave Pogba searching for another opportunity as a free agent, while Monaco would have to accept that the ambitious comeback project produced far less football than anyone expected.
For Pogba, the immediate priority is therefore painfully familiar: get healthy, get playing and somehow convince another club that the spectacular midfielder of old is still waiting to return.
