The Gunners came from behind to defeat Xabi Alonso’s ambitious Chelsea 2–1 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 6, in a ferocious London derby that had almost everything except a Chelsea victory. Morgan Rogers struck after just 77 seconds, but Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard completed Arsenal’s comeback. The result leaves Mikel Arteta’s champions with three wins from three league matches, while Chelsea suffered their first defeat under Alonso.
Alonso Brings the Fire, Arteta Brings the Receipt
The meeting between Arteta and Alonso carried an intriguing Basque flavour, with two highly decorated former midfielders now attempting to impose their footballing philosophies on English football. Alonso’s Chelsea arrived with plenty of attacking confidence after an impressive opening to the campaign, while Arsenal entered the contest with the psychological advantage of being the reigning champions. The match quickly demonstrated that confidence and completeness are two different things — particularly when Arsenal are involved.
Chelsea wasted almost no time making their argument. Rogers, the £117 million summer signing whom Arsenal had reportedly pursued, put the visitors ahead inside two minutes. The irony was almost too convenient: the player Arsenal wanted had returned to the Emirates wearing blue and immediately behaved like somebody determined to send the Gunners a very expensive reminder. But Havertz eventually equalised before Ødegaard struck after the interval, leaving Alonso to contemplate the uncomfortable truth that Chelsea can look spectacular and still lose to a side that appears frighteningly comfortable under pressure.
Arsenal’s Completeness Meets Chelsea’s Ambition
Chelsea were hardly embarrassed. Their aggressive football produced dangerous moments throughout the afternoon, while Rogers, Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer and others repeatedly threatened Arsenal. Yet the reigning champions demonstrated the difference between an exciting project and an established machine. Reuters reported that Arsenal’s victory extended their unbeaten run against Chelsea to 12 matches across all competitions, while Chelsea have now conceded seven league goals in three matches.
For Alonso, the defeat may ultimately prove useful rather than disastrous. Chelsea have invested heavily in rebuilding the squad, including the headline-making Rogers deal, and their attacking football under the Spaniard has already attracted considerable attention. Even Chelsea’s official post-match assessment stressed that the team had competed strongly despite losing, while Rogers insisted the Blues can improve. In other words, Chelsea may have lost the match, but the rebuilding notice remains firmly pinned to the wall. Arsenal, meanwhile, appear to have misplaced the notice informing everybody else that the title race is supposed to be difficult.
The wider lesson from the Emirates is therefore becoming difficult to ignore: Chelsea may be resurgent, Alonso may have brought new energy, and Rogers may eventually justify his enormous price tag, but Arsenal currently look like the more complete side. The Gunners have demonstrated that they can absorb an early punch, reorganise and finish the job — precisely the sort of behaviour expected from champions. Chelsea have plenty to build on, but if Sunday was a warning, Arsenal have already sounded the alarm.
