Former England winger Andros Townsend has revealed that being run over by a pitch roller in Thailand was “terrifying”, providing football with perhaps the strangest warm-up incident of the year. The 35-year-old PT Prachuap player was warming up during half-time against Pattani when a ride-on pitch roller struck him, briefly trapping his left leg beneath the machine. Remarkably, Townsend escaped serious injury, returned to the action and later came off the bench as his side won 3-0.
When the Pitch Roller Became the Main Opponent
Townsend has since explained that the moment was far more frightening than the funny social-media clips might suggest. Speaking about the incident, he said he feared his previously operated-on ankle or knee could snap and described the pressure of having the heavy machine on him as “quite terrifying.” He was eventually able to help relieve some of the pressure before teammates assisted him in getting free.
The bizarre accident happened while Townsend was warming up and following a ball outside the normal practice area. The machine, apparently being operated by stadium staff, moved into his path, knocked him down and passed over his legs before stopping. His teammates rushed to help, while Townsend somehow remained determined to continue warming up. Townsend Refuses to Let a Roller Ruin His Matchday
Despite the terrifying experience, Townsend later made light of the situation online, joking that playing away at Stoke City “wasn’t so bad after all.” The reference was to an earlier comparison he had made between the sunny conditions of his Thai football adventure and the famously less tropical experience of visiting Stoke. Football supporters were therefore given the rare sight of a player being run over by machinery and still finding enough energy afterwards to make a joke about Stoke.
Even more remarkably, Townsend eventually entered the match as a late substitute and helped complete a 3-0 victory for PT Prachuap. The former Tottenham and Crystal Palace winger, who has 13 England caps and moved to Thai football after leaving the English game, has therefore added an extraordinary chapter to an already lengthy career. His latest Thai adventure has apparently included sunshine, football, three points and an unexpected meeting with agricultural technology.
For Townsend, the most important outcome is that a genuinely terrifying incident ended without serious injury, even though the footage and his subsequent comments have turned the episode into one of football’s most bizarre recent stories. His ability to return to the pitch and joke about the incident has only added to the surreal nature of the episode, but the seriousness of being trapped beneath heavy machinery should not be lost beneath the humour.
