Algeria 0–2 Nigeria: Osimhen Leads Super Eagles into AFCON 2025 Semi-Final

Nigeria produced a commanding and disciplined performance to defeat Algeria 2–0 in Marrakech, securing a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams underlined the Super Eagles’ dominance on the night, as they outclassed a previously resolute Algerian side across all key areas of the game.

Despite the scoreline, the contest was not without its challenges. Algeria entered the quarter-final having conceded just once in the tournament, but Nigeria’s control, intensity, and attacking depth eventually told. The Super Eagles now advance to a last-four showdown with tournament hosts Morocco, continuing their pursuit of a fourth continental title.

Nigeria’s Control from the First Whistle

From the opening minutes, Nigeria imposed themselves on the match, controlling possession and pushing Algeria deep into their own half. The Super Eagles finished the game with 58 per cent possession and attempted 13 shots to Algeria’s three, a clear reflection of their territorial and tactical superiority.

Algeria struggled to progress the ball through midfield, as Nigeria’s pressing disrupted their rhythm and forced errors. The Fennecs failed to register a single shot on target throughout the match, an extraordinary statistic at this stage of the tournament and a testament to Nigeria’s defensive organisation.

Although the first half ended goalless, the balance of play strongly favoured Nigeria. Clear chances were created, including a Calvin Bassey volley cleared off the line and a promising effort from Akor Adams that narrowly missed the target.

Osimhen Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough arrived just 85 seconds into the second half, and it came from Nigeria’s talismanic striker. Victor Osimhen rose unchallenged at the back post to head Bruno Onyemaechi’s deep cross down and across goal, opening the scoring with his fourth goal of the tournament.

The goal exposed a rare lapse in Algeria’s defence, involving a series of small but costly errors. Defender Ramy Bensebaini misjudged the flight of the ball, while goalkeeper Luca Zidane was caught in an awkward position, allowing Osimhen’s header to slip underneath him.

It was a decisive moment that shifted the match firmly in Nigeria’s favour and reflected the pressure they had applied since kickoff.

Akor Adams Seals the Victory

Nigeria doubled their advantage ten minutes later with a move that highlighted their attacking cohesion. Alex Iwobi unlocked the Algerian defence with a precise pass to Osimhen, who selflessly squared the ball for Akor Adams to round the goalkeeper and tap into an empty net.

Adams could have added a second personal goal late on when he headed against the upright from another Osimhen delivery, reinforcing the sense that Nigeria might have won by a wider margin. All five of Nigeria’s shots on target were classified as big chances, underlining their efficiency in creating clear scoring opportunities.

Statistically, the gap between the two sides was stark. Nigeria recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.92 compared to Algeria’s 0.13, and had 42 touches in the opposition box against Algeria’s 10.

Midfield Mastery and Defensive Solidity

While the goals came from the forwards, Nigeria’s success was built on a strong collective performance, particularly in midfield. Alex Iwobi delivered a composed and creative display, dictating play and providing the decisive pass for the second goal. His influence ensured Nigeria maintained tempo and control throughout the contest.

Defensively, the Super Eagles were equally impressive. Calvin Bassey and his fellow defenders kept Algeria’s attacking threats quiet, limiting Riyad Mahrez’s impact before he was substituted midway through the second half. Algeria’s inability to test the Nigerian goalkeeper highlighted the effectiveness of the defensive structure.

The only concern for Nigeria was the suspension of Wilfred Ndidi, who will miss the semi-final. Nevertheless, the performance offered strong evidence of the squad’s depth and resilience.

Looking Ahead to Morocco

With this victory, Super Eagles advance to their 16th AFCON semi-final and will now face hosts Morocco in Rabat. The Super Eagles will take confidence from their dominant display but will also reflect on missed chances that could prove costly against stronger opposition.

If Super Eagles are to lift the trophy, greater efficiency in front of goal may be required. However, on this evidence, they remain one of the tournament’s most complete and formidable sides.
