FA Pushes for Longer Ban on Millwall Keeper Liam Roberts After Brutal Challenge on Crystal Palace’s Mateta

FA Pushes for Longer Ban on Millwall Keeper Liam Roberts After Brutal Challenge on Crystal Palace’s Mateta

The FA Cup fifth-round clash between Millwall and Crystal Palace on March 1, 2025, took an unfortunate turn early in the game when Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts found himself at the center of controversy. In an attempt to intercept a forward pass, Roberts miscalculated his challenge and ended up striking Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta in the head with his studs. The result? A bloodied Mateta, 25 stitches in his left ear, and an entire footballing world gasping in horror.

Referee Michael Oliver initially saw the incident as a bookable offense, brandishing a yellow card. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) had other ideas. Upon review, the challenge was deemed serious foul play, and Oliver had no choice but to upgrade the decision to a straight red card, leaving Millwall a man down for the majority of the match.

The FA Calls for a Stronger Punishment

While the standard suspension for a straight red card due to serious foul play is three matches, the Football Association (FA) is not convinced this is enough. In what they describe as a “truly exceptional” case, the FA is seeking an extension to Liam Roberts’ ban, arguing that the punishment should reflect the gravity of the offense.
Under its discretionary powers, the FA has submitted a claim for an increased suspension, citing the severity of the injury and the recklessness of the challenge. Liam Roberts has until March 6 to respond, after which an independent regulatory commission will review the case and decide whether the standard three-match suspension should be lengthened.

Millwall Stands Firm in Liam Roberts’ Defense

Unsurprisingly, Millwall Football Club is not taking the FA’s move lightly. The club has already made it clear that they intend to contest any extension of Liam Roberts’ suspension. While acknowledging the severity of the incident, Millwall believes that Roberts should not be made an example of and that the current three-match ban is sufficient punishment.

In addition to backing their goalkeeper, Millwall has condemned the wave of abuse directed at Liam Roberts on social media following the incident. The club described the online backlash as “horrendous” and called for greater protections against such vitriol. In a show of solidarity, Millwall fans held a minute’s applause for Roberts during their Championship fixture against Bristol City—timed perfectly to the eighth minute, the same moment he was sent off against Palace.

Crystal Palace’s Outrage:

“The Most Reckless Challenge” Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish did not mince words when discussing the incident. He described Roberts’ challenge as “the most reckless” he had ever seen on a football pitch. The club, while relieved that Mateta’s injury was not worse, fully supports the FA’s push for a stricter punishment.
Mateta, who was immediately hospitalized after the incident, has since been discharged and is on the road to recovery. Palace fans, however, remain outraged, calling for a lengthy suspension to deter similar challenges in the future.

What Happens Next?

The FA’s decision to pursue an extended ban signals a firm stance on dangerous play, particularly when it results in serious injury. If the independent regulatory commission sides with the FA, Roberts could face a significantly longer suspension, setting a precedent for future reckless challenges.
As the March 6 deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Liam Roberts and Millwall’s response. Will the commission uphold the FA’s call for further punishment, or will Millwall’s defense sway the decision in their favor? One thing is certain—this incident will not be forgotten anytime soon.
