Mohammed Salah Criticises 'Harsh' Alexander-Arnold Boos from Liverpool Fans

Mohamed Salah has voiced his disappointment over the reaction of some Liverpool fans who booed Trent Alexander-Arnold during the club’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal at Anfield. The right-back, who announced he will leave the club at the end of June when his contract expires, was jeered by sections of the crowd during his first appearance since confirming his exit.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, a Liverpool native and product of the club’s youth system, has spent nearly two decades at Anfield and was pivotal in the club’s recent success under Jürgen Klopp. Despite his contributions, his decision to depart — reportedly to join Spanish giants Real Madrid — has been met with a mixed reception from supporters, something Salah believes is deeply unfair.

Salah’s Defence: “He Gave It All”

Speaking to Sky Sports, Salah did not mince words in defending his long-time teammate. “I think somehow the fans were being harsh with him,” the Egyptian forward said. “He didn’t deserve it at the time. He deserved the fans to treat him the best way possible because he gave it all to the fans.”

Salah further appealed for empathy, pointing out the longevity and dedication of Alexander-Arnold’s career at Liverpool. “We shouldn’t act this way with anyone who always appreciates the people, who came here even for six months. Imagine someone who gives you his all for 20 years. It shouldn’t be like this,” he added. “I hope that will change next game… because he deserves the farewell.”

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

Alexander-Arnold’s career at Liverpool is nothing short of illustrious. Since making his professional debut in 2016, he has made 353 appearances, scored 23 goals, and delivered countless assists from right-back. He played a central role in the club’s triumphs, including two Premier League titles, a Champions League victory, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.

Salah emphasized the depth of his admiration for his teammate, calling him “one of the best players in the club’s history.” He added: “I really love him… He has done a lot for the city and the club. He gave it all. He deserves the best farewell leaving the club.”

No Pressure to Stay: Salah Respects Trent’s Decision

While fans may be divided over Alexander-Arnold’s impending departure, Salah made it clear he respects his decision. The forward confirmed that the two had spoken about the move, but he never attempted to persuade Trent to stay. “I think he needed a new challenge. He spoke to me about it. It’s his decision for sure,” Salah said.

Highlighting the magnitude of Alexander-Arnold’s achievements, Salah reflected: “He’s won it all twice or three times – what more can he have done? It’s his decision – I did not try to convince him to stay because I know 20 years in a club is not easy, it’s so tough.”

A Call for Class: Let Trent Leave with Honour

As Liverpool prepares for the final matches of the season, Salah has urged the club’s supporters to show Alexander-Arnold the respect he has earned. With a possible farewell fixture against Brighton or during the final home game of the campaign, the Egyptian called on fans to ensure the right-back receives a send-off worthy of his contributions.

In Salah’s view, Alexander-Arnold’s departure marks the end of an era — one that should be remembered with pride, not bitterness. His plea is a timely reminder of the emotional bonds formed between players and clubs, and the dignity that should accompany such departures. Whether his words sway the fans remains to be seen, but the message is clear: Liverpool owes Trent Alexander-Arnold more than boos.
