The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for transforming the state into a vibrant hub for sports development and international competitions. Speaking on the opening day of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) U18/U20 Championship in Abeokuta, Olopade hailed the governor’s unwavering commitment to sports as a cornerstone of youth empowerment and economic growth.
“This is no longer just about sports,” Olopade declared at the newly refurbished MKO Abiola Stadium. “What Governor Abiodun has done is turn Ogun State into a strategic centre for sports production. He has not only revived the state’s sporting spirit but placed it on the continental map.” He described the governor’s investments in infrastructure as visionary and capable of hosting global sports spectacles.
According to the DG, the governor’s efforts have ignited a sporting renaissance in the Ogun state, making Ogun State a reference point in both national and international circles. “This is what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu meant when he tasked us to move beyond being consumers of sports to becoming producers of sports events and legacies,” Olopade noted.
Gateway Games Legacy Inspires CAA Championships in Abeokuta, Ogun State
Barely two months after the successful hosting of the National Sports Festival — Gateway Games 2024 — Ogun State once again took centre stage as it welcomed athletes from across Africa for the prestigious CAA U18/U20 Championship. The competition, held in the heart of Abeokuta, kicked off on Wednesday with electric performances and record-breaking feats.
The NSC boss praised the seamless transition from hosting a national event to organizing a continental one. “The Gateway Games was arguably one of the best organized sports festivals Nigeria has ever witnessed. To now see Ogun State hosting Africa in this capacity proves that Governor Abiodun is building an unmatched sporting legacy,” Olopade added.
Chairman of the Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, echoed the sentiment, saying the hosting of two major events within a short period is a testament to the governor’s foresight. “Our youth are the biggest beneficiaries of this era of sports transformation,” he said.
Exciting Opening Day: Nigeria, South Africa Shine Bright
The action got underway at the MKO Abiola Stadium with thrilling performances from future African athletics stars. Nigeria and South Africa, the traditional powerhouses of African athletics, wasted no time in setting the pace on the track and field.
Nigeria’s Praise Ikweki secured the country’s first medal — a bronze in the High Jump. Ikweki, who competed alongside Melvin Ododo, had a near-flawless progression up to 2.03m but fell short at 2.06m. South Africa’s Mateo Le Roux cleared the height to claim gold, showing early signs of continental dominance.
In the U-18 Boys 100m Heat One, Nigeria’s Igbigbidje James Clifford posted 11.44s to finish just behind South Africa’s Mukona Manavhela who clocked 11.38s. The duo qualified for the semi-finals, showcasing a budding rivalry that could define the championship.
Nigerian Girls Show Class in Sprint Events
The girls’ sprints did not disappoint, with Nigeria’s Mariam Jegede storming to victory in the first heat of the U18 100m with a time of 12.13s. Congo’s Boukama Gladys and Ghana’s Darkoah Kwateng trailed behind in second and third respectively, setting up a promising semi-final lineup.
Jegede’s performance marked an early statement of intent from Team Nigeria’s female athletes, who have consistently been medal contenders in regional competitions. With the home crowd cheering every stride, the athletes delivered a day to remember.
The crowd, made up of school children, coaches, and dignitaries, brought a carnival-like atmosphere to the stadium, reinforcing Abeokuta’s emerging identity as the heartbeat of African athletics.
Ogun State Sporting Future Looks Bright
Hon. Olopade concluded his remarks with a bold prediction: “Abeokuta and Ogun State will soon be on par with global sports cities. We are seeing the birth of a sustainable sports economy right here — jobs, tourism, and international visibility are all taking root because of sports.”
He emphasized that the CAA Championship is not just a competition but a vehicle for long-term youth development and socio-economic impact. “Governor Dapo Abiodun is leading a revolution, and the youth of Ogun State will remember his legacy for generations.”
As the championship continues in the coming days, all eyes remain on Abeokuta, not just for the medals, but for what it now represents — a glowing symbol of what’s possible when leadership, vision, and sports unite.
