Vinícius Júnior has strongly condemned what he described as racist abuse during Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Benfica in Lisbon, calling perpetrators “cowards” and criticising what he termed a “poorly executed protocol” by the match officials. The Brazilian forward alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni directed a racist slur at him during the second half of the Champions League encounter, prompting a brief interruption to the match.
The incident occurred shortly after the decisive goal, when Vinícius approached referee François Letexier to report the alleged comment. The match was delayed for approximately 10 minutes as the referee activated the anti-racism protocol. After discussions between players, coaching staff, and officials, the teams ultimately resumed play and completed the fixture.
Vinícius later addressed the matter publicly, expressing disappointment at what he perceived as insufficient action and reiterating his stance against racism in football.
Allegations During Goal Celebration
The controversy arose in the 50th minute following what was described as the only goal of the match. After celebrating, Vinícius reported that Prestianni had made a remark towards him while covering his mouth. According to Vinícius and supported by teammate Kylian Mbappé, the word used was “mono,” meaning monkey.
Referee François Letexier signalled the activation of the anti-racism protocol, a procedure designed to address discriminatory behaviour during matches. However, despite the gesture and temporary halt in play, the game resumed following consultations between the teams and match officials.
Mbappé later stated that he personally heard the alleged remark and argued that such conduct should carry serious consequences. He questioned how a player could make such comments on a professional football pitch and suggested that individuals responsible for racist abuse should not participate at the highest levels of competition.
Vinícius Speaks Out
In a social media post following the match, Vinícius described racists as “above all cowards” who hide behind the protection of others. He expressed frustration that the protocol implemented during the match did not lead to what he considered meaningful action.
“I don’t like appearing in situations like this, especially after a great victory when the headlines should be about Real Madrid,” he wrote. “But it’s necessary.”
The forward has previously spoken out against racial abuse and has become one of the most prominent voices in football advocating stronger measures against discrimination. Real Madrid’s Response
Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa stated that the club would have supported Vinícius if he had chosen to leave the pitch. He confirmed that the team discussed walking off and emphasised that the club stands firmly against racism in all forms.
“You have to ask the Benfica player what he said,” Arbeloa remarked. “We have to be totally intolerant of racism; we cannot allow things like this to happen on the pitch in 2026. I have no reason not to believe Vinícius.”
Mbappé echoed this sentiment, describing the alleged comment as unacceptable and asserting that the team initially considered refusing to continue the match. Ultimately, the players returned to the field and completed the fixture.
Benfica’s Position and Mourinho’s Remarks
Benfica head coach José Mourinho adopted a more measured tone when addressing the issue. He said he did not wish to accuse Vinícius of dishonesty nor portray his own player as beyond reproach, emphasising the need for balance while awaiting clarity.
Mourinho revealed that during the stoppage he initially spoke with Arbeloa without fully understanding the reason for the delay. He later acknowledged that discussions took place regarding whether the match would resume, given Vinícius’s apparent reluctance to continue.
The Portuguese coach also commented on Vinícius’s celebratory reaction after the goal, suggesting that great players can express joy with composure, referencing historic football figures such as Alfredo Di Stéfano, Pelé, and Eusébio. His remarks, however, were separate from the central allegation of racist abuse.
