Will the Premier League Get an Extra Champions League Spot

For years, the Premier League’s “race for the top four” has defined the battle for Champions League qualification. However, that dynamic could shift significantly this season as England’s top flight is in contention to earn a fifth spot in Europe’s elite club competition.

UEFA’s new rule awards two bonus spots in the 2025-26 Champions League to the two domestic leagues with the best performances in European competitions this season. This means English clubs, even those not directly involved in European competitions, have a vested interest in the success of their league counterparts. For instance, fans of clubs like Bournemouth, Newcastle, and Nottingham Forest might find themselves rooting for Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Manchester United in the Champions League and Europa League. Remarkably, under certain circumstances, English clubs could even secure up to seven Champions League places next season.

How Leagues Earn Extra Champions League Spots

Each league’s eligibility for an extra Champions League spot is determined by UEFA’s coefficient ranking, which is based on European match performances. Teams earn two points for a win and one for a draw, with these points being totaled and then divided by the number of clubs from that league competing in Europe. For example, if the Premier League accumulates 100 coefficient points across its seven participating clubs, its final coefficient would be 14.28.

This season, additional bonus points are awarded to clubs playing in the Champions League, favoring leagues with more teams in the competition, such as Germany and Italy. The top two leagues in the coefficient rankings will receive an extra Champions League qualification spot, which will be awarded to the team finishing just below the league’s regular Champions League allocation. In the Premier League’s case, this means that if England secures one of the top two coefficient spots, the team finishing fifth in the league will qualify for the Champions League. Last season, the bonus places went to Bologna (Serie A) and Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga), setting a precedent that could benefit the Premier League this time around.

Premier League Leads Coefficient Table, Poised for Extra Champions League Spot

As of January 26, England leads the UEFA coefficient rankings, putting the Premier League in a strong position to secure an additional Champions League place for the 2025-26 season. With the race for European qualification intensifying, English clubs are set to benefit from the new Champions League format, which rewards high-performing leagues with extra berths.

Premier League Tops UEFA Coefficient Rankings

The Premier League has amassed the highest coefficient points, solidifying England’s dominance in European competitions. Based on the latest UEFA rankings, England leads with 100 points and an impressive 14.34 coefficient average, significantly ahead of its nearest competitors.

Trailing behind England are Italy (88 points, 11.05 average), Spain (82 points, 11.77 average), France (66 points, 10.94 average), and Germany (79 points, 9.88 average). The rankings are determined by club performances in UEFA tournaments, including the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League. With England’s clubs excelling across all three competitions, Opta estimates a 98% chance that the Premier League will earn an additional Champions League place next season.

This means that the English top flight is set to benefit from the expanded Champions League format, which will see 36 teams compete from 2025 onward. The extra qualification slot would go to the team finishing fifth in the Premier League, marking a historic shift in English football’s European representation.

Who Could Benefit from the Bonus Champions League Spot?

If the Premier League secures five Champions League places, the team finishing fifth in the 2024-25 season will qualify for Europe’s elite tournament. Currently, Newcastle United holds fifth place, but the race remains wide open with several clubs vying for the coveted spot.

With just a 14-point gap between Arsenal in second and Fulham in 10th, multiple teams remain in contention. Nottingham Forest, currently third, have a 44% chance of finishing in the top four, according to Opta, and their chances rise to 63% if five places are available. Newcastle’s probability of making the top four stands at 27%, but they have a 45% chance of finishing in the top five, while Bournemouth’s odds are 13% for top four and 26% for top five.

If England does indeed secure five spots, the battle for European football will be more intense than ever. Additionally, two teams will qualify for the Europa League, while one will enter the Europa Conference League, ensuring strong English representation across all UEFA competitions.

Could Champions League and Europa League Winners Boost England’s Representation?

Aside from league qualification, clubs can secure Champions League spots by winning either the Champions League or the Europa League. In previous years, a maximum of five teams from one country could compete in the Champions League, but UEFA has scrapped that rule, meaning England could have up to seven representatives next season.

If a club such as Manchester United or Tottenham, who are unlikely to finish in the top five, wins the Europa League, they will automatically qualify for the Champions League alongside the top five teams. Similarly, the Champions League winners are guaranteed a spot in next season’s competition. If Manchester City, for example, wins the Champions League but finishes outside the top five, they would still qualify, ensuring even more English teams in Europe’s biggest tournament.

This scenario has occurred before—Chelsea won the Champions League in 2012 despite finishing sixth in the Premier League, taking a spot at the expense of Tottenham, who finished fourth. With the new rules, England could see an unprecedented seven teams in the 2025-26 Champions League, reinforcing the Premier League’s status as the most competitive domestic league in the world.
