Arsenal have opened the 2026/27 campaign with a statement that could make every Premier League title hopeful reach for a metaphorical bulletproof vest. The Gunners demolished Manchester City 3-0 in the FA Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, turning Enzo Maresca’s first competitive match as Pep Guardiola’s successor into an unexpectedly painful welcome party.
The warning signs appeared almost immediately. Riccardo Calafiori struck after roughly 24 seconds, the fastest goal in the Community Shield for 58 years, before Kai Havertz doubled Arsenal’s advantage in the 28th minute. Martin Ødegaard then made it three shortly after halftime, leaving City staring at the scoreboard as though somebody had changed the settings without telling them.
Arsenal Arrive With the Energy of a Team on a Mission
The result was more than a trophy-winning afternoon for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side looked sharp, aggressive and prepared to treat the traditional season curtain-raiser as a declaration of intent. The Gunners controlled the contest for long periods, while City struggled to establish the authority associated with the Guardiola era. Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya also completed the afternoon with a clean sheet.
For Maresca, however, this was supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter rather than a sequel to the Guardiola years. Manchester City appointed him on a three-year contract in June after Guardiola stepped down following a decade in charge. Maresca knows the club well, having previously worked there as an assistant and with the development side, but succeeding Guardiola was always going to come with an enormous spotlight.
Three Goals Later, The Pep Questions Were Already Knocking
The irony was almost too convenient for Arsenal: they arrived expecting a Manchester City side still carrying the aura of Pep Guardiola and instead found Maresca attempting to build a new identity under immense expectations. The Italian has already acknowledged the scale of the challenge of following Guardiola, who left behind an extraordinary trophy haul and an enormous managerial legacy.
Arsenal, meanwhile, had no interest in allowing the occasion to become a gentle transition ceremony. Calafiori’s early strike effectively rang the alarm bell, Havertz added another before halftime, and Ødegaard delivered the third shortly after the restart. By then, the Community Shield had begun to resemble less of a friendly curtain-raiser and more of an Arsenal-issued notice to the rest of the league: the defending champions intend to remain very serious about their crown.
The Community Shield is not the Premier League itself, and one match cannot decide a title race. But Arsenal have certainly provided the opening headline of the new campaign. Manchester City and Maresca now have plenty to examine before the competitive season gathers full speed, while Arteta’s men can enjoy a trophy and the psychological boost that comes with beating a major rival so convincingly.
