HANSI FLICK: THE BALLON D’OR CAMPAIGN JUST GOT A VERY LOUD BARCELONA VOICE

The Ballon d’Or debate has received another major talking point after Hansi Flick publicly backed Lamine Yamal to win football’s most prestigious individual award. The Barcelona manager did not merely praise the teenager as a promising youngster; he went considerably further, saying Yamal would deserve to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

Flick’s endorsement carries particular weight because he works with Yamal every day. The German coach sees the player in training, watches his performances from the touchline and is responsible for deciding how best to use his extraordinary ability. His verdict is therefore based on considerably more than a few spectacular clips appearing on social media.

Flick Makes His Yamal Ballon d’Or Position Clear

Hansi Flick was careful to frame his comments around his belief in his own player, but there was no hesitation in his assessment. He said Lamine Yamal is his player and a Barcelona player, before adding that he believes the young star would deserve to win the Ballon d’Or.

That does not mean Yamal has been officially declared the winner, of course. The award is determined through its voting process, and the final result depends on the performances and achievements of the candidates across the relevant period. Flick’s statement is an endorsement, not an announcement.

Still, the strength of the praise is notable. Managers rarely need to manufacture excitement around a player who is already receiving global attention, yet Flick went out of his way to underline Yamal’s quality. His message was essentially that the Barcelona winger’s case should be taken seriously because his performances have earned that consideration.

And Flick’s description of Yamal as “SPECIAL” adds another layer to the praise. It suggests that, from the manager’s perspective, the teenager possesses something beyond conventional technical ability—a quality that makes him stand out even among elite footballers.

Lamine Yamal Continues to Build His Case

The significance of Flick’s comments lies partly in how quickly Lamine Yamal has moved from being viewed as a spectacular young talent to being discussed alongside established global superstars. At Barcelona, the expectations surrounding him have grown rapidly, and every outstanding performance now feeds directly into wider debates about individual awards.

The Ballon d’Or conversation, however, requires more than spectacular moments. Voters consider a player’s overall performances and influence, while team success and achievements naturally form part of the wider context. That means Yamal’s case will ultimately have to compete with those of other elite players.

Flick nevertheless believes his player belongs in that conversation. His comments are also a reminder that Barcelona see Yamal not simply as the future of the club but as someone capable of competing for the biggest individual honours right now.

For Lamine Yamal, that is both a compliment and a challenge. Once a manager publicly says you deserve the Ballon d’Or, every performance becomes part of the argument. Flick has made his choice clear, and now Yamal has the rather inconvenient job of continuing to provide evidence for it.
