Former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has offered a fresh and deeply personal account of the circumstances surrounding his departure from Arsenal, alleging that he was frozen out of the first-team setup after speaking publicly about the treatment of Uighur Muslims in China.
The former Germany international, who spent eight years in North London, said he knew there would be consequences when he chose to speak out in 2019, but insisted he had no regrets. His latest comments reopen debate over one of the most controversial episodes of his Arsenal career and raise further questions about the relationship between elite sport, commercial interests and freedom of expression.
Ozil Says Speaking Out Came at a Cost
Speaking at the Leadership in the Age of Confusion Summit, Ozil explained that he felt compelled to use his platform after researching reports concerning Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region. According to the retired midfielder, he understood that making such a statement could create difficulties for him professionally.
He said he posted his views despite knowing it might lead to trouble. Ozil now claims that after the statement, opportunities to play for Arsenal effectively disappeared, with the club shutting him out of the squad and denying him the chance to compete.
The comments represent one of the clearest explanations yet from Ozil himself regarding why his Arsenal career ended so abruptly after once being one of the club’s most influential players.
Isolation From the First-Team Setup
Ozil stated that he spent approximately eight months training alone while remaining outside the first-team picture. He described the period as emotionally difficult, particularly because football had been central to his life and identity.
The playmaker suggested that teammates may have sympathised with his situation but were unable to become involved due to concerns over their own careers and families. His remarks indicate that he believed others inside the club felt constrained from publicly supporting him.
For a player who once thrilled supporters with creativity, vision and technical brilliance, the final chapter at Arsenal contrasted sharply with the heights he had reached earlier in his time at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal’s Previous Position
At the time of the controversy, Arsenal moved quickly to distance the club from Ozil’s remarks. A statement issued on Chinese social media platform Weibo said the views expressed were his personal opinion and that the club did not involve itself in politics.
Then-chief executive Vinai Venkatesham later rejected suggestions that Arsenal’s response was motivated by commercial concerns. He maintained that the club merely wished to clarify that Ozil had spoken in an individual capacity rather than on behalf of Arsenal.
Those comments formed the club’s public stance during a period when scrutiny intensified over football’s commercial ties to global markets.
From Star Signing to Sudden Departure
Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 for a then-club record fee and quickly became one of the Premier League’s most recognisable talents. His passing range and creativity helped Arsenal win multiple domestic trophies, while his popularity among supporters remained significant.
However, injuries, inconsistent form and managerial changes complicated the latter stages of his stay. His contract was eventually terminated by mutual consent in January 2021, allowing him to join Fenerbahce.
His retirement in 2023 brought an end to a distinguished career that included a 2014 FIFA World Cup triumph with Germany national football team.
Family Support During Difficult Times
Ozil also used the event to reflect on the importance of family during adversity. He credited his wife and child for helping him through what he described as a painful period of exclusion from football.
He encouraged younger people to value close personal support systems, saying family strength can help individuals endure professional setbacks and uncertainty.
His remarks offered a more human dimension to a dispute often framed purely in sporting or political terms
