Coventry City have completed the signing of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest in a reported £9 million deal, giving the newly promoted side another reason to believe that returning to the Premier League after 25 years was only the beginning. The transfer, announced on Monday, comes just days before Coventry’s daunting opening fixture against reigning champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Friday.
Awoniyi Begins New Chapter at Coventry
The 29-year-old striker arrives with considerable Premier League experience, having made 90 league appearances for Forest and scored 21 goals, while records across all competitions put his Forest tally at 23 goals in 103 appearances. Awoniyi joined Forest in 2022 after spending six years under Liverpool’s ownership, much of that period on loan, including a productive spell at Union Berlin.
For Awoniyi, however, the move is more than another line on a transfer spreadsheet. His Forest career was interrupted by a serious abdominal injury suffered after colliding with the goalpost against Leicester in May 2025. He required surgery and was placed in an induced coma during his treatment before eventually recovering. The episode became one of the most difficult moments of his career, making his subsequent return to football particularly significant.
Coventry’s Big Test Arrives Immediately
Coventry’s decision to recruit Awoniyi could hardly have received a more dramatic introduction. The Sky Blues are returning to the top flight for the first time since the 2000-01 season and will begin their campaign away to Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, on Friday, August 21. In football terms, Coventry have apparently decided that if they are going to announce their comeback, they might as well do it at the Emirates.
Awoniyi has already welcomed the challenge, praising his new teammates for the work that carried Coventry from the Championship into the Premier League. The humorous part, naturally, is that Coventry’s reward for that promotion is a first-night examination against the champions, while their new Nigerian striker could find himself facing one of the league’s most formidable sides almost immediately after changing dressing rooms. For Coventry supporters, it is either an intimidating welcome party or the beginning of a very entertaining story.
The Awoniyi transfer therefore gives Coventry experience, physical presence and a proven Premier League striker at precisely the moment the club needs reinforcement. Whether he becomes the hero of Coventry’s top-flight return or simply discovers that the Premier League does not believe in gentle introductions will begin to become clearer at Arsenal. OGM News FC will continue to watch the story as Awoniyi starts this new chapter in Coventry blue.
